College Counseling

College Planning

In the High School program, we effectively combine the independence of the Montessori philosophy with the strength of a college prep culture. The college counseling philosophy focuses on finding the schools that fit the student rather than molding the student to fit a school. Juniors and seniors meet as a class weekly with our College Counselor to work through every aspect of the college admission process.

The College Counselor supports students through setting goals and identifying key criteria in junior year, to drafting essays and preparing for interviews in senior year. Interview Day is a spring tradition enjoyed by seniors which enables them to turn the tables and conduct mock interviews with juniors. Seniors pull from their own college interview experiences to create a realistic interview process for juniors as they embark on the college interview phase of their application process.

Montessori encourages independence, creativity, and problem-solving, all of which are skills that are a great fit for Olin’s hands-on, project-based approach. Because Montessori students are used to self-directed learning and working in teams, they often adapt quickly to our collaborative and innovative environment.

Standardized Testing

At WMS, sophomores and juniors participate in the PSAT/NMSQT program. The PSAT is taken in the fall.

A mock ACT is given to offer practice with lengthy standardized tests as well as a baseline to use when making testing decisions.

Aptitude Assessments

All sophomores participate in an aptitude assessment. The College Counselor reviews the results with students and parents to identify possible fields of study and career paths.

Outcomes

  • WMS High School graduates have been accepted to colleges and universities throughout the United States, Canada and Europe (see full map below).
  • Early application deadlines have been met by every WMS college applicant.
  • Inspiring academics paired with a focus on life skills result in robust college options.

Parent of a WMS High School graduate

Having a college counselor who can work so closely with students, and come to know them and their families so well, is a unique experience. That in itself increased the odds that we would make choices that fit our needs and our budget while also making sure our son was at the right school.
